UK sees increase in driving offences

4 March 2016

The UK has seen a rise in the number of driving offences on the road in the past year.

Since the new drug driving offence was introduced in March 2015, there has been a huge rise in drug drive arrests in particular. The drink and drug drive campaign which took place during the Christmas period in 2015 saw 1,888 drug screening tests carried out over just 1 month, with 50% of those tested showing up as positive.images

Provisional figures also show that eight times as many suspected drug drivers were arrested in Cheshire alone in 2015 compared to 2014, with over 530 from March 2015 to January 2016; this is up 70 on the whole of the previous year.

Mirroring this increase in driver offences, annual figures from Lex Autolease reveal that endorsable offences such as driving dangerously, speeding and driving whilst using a mobile phone, accounted for 22% of the number of fines incurred in 2015. The findings compiled from 317,000 company vehicles show a year on year increase of 9% to a total of 43,636 instances of endorsable offences.

These findings only highlight the ongoing need for businesses to invest in driver training and comprehensive licence checks. With the number of driving offences increasing, it’s vital that businesses have the correct, up to date accounts of their employees’ driving licences.
